Bangaranga leadership lessons

How you handle criticism will determine your success.

Last Saturday was fantastic.

My home country, Bulgaria, won Eurovision for the first time!

Bulgaria was the underdog. Most predictions placed the song around 16th. Not exactly the position people associate with winning.

Whether you personally like Bangaranga by Dara or not, the result speaks for itself: she won both the jury vote and the public vote.

That made me reflect on something important.

Whenever you try to achieve something meaningful, you will face criticism.

Some people will tell you it is impossible.

Some will focus only on what is wrong.

A few will give you useful feedback.

And a few will believe in you before the result is obvious.

The challenge is learning the difference.

My curiosity pushed me to understand Dara’s journey better. She faced criticism about her song, her style, and even the lyrics. At some point, she was close to giving up and not even attending Eurovision.

But she had a strong support system. She listened. She improved. She worked hard.

Even after the semi-final, she made adjustments to make the final performance more impactful.

That is not luck.

That is resilience.

That is execution.

That is strategic leadership.

Winning is never easy. It requires risk, discipline, and the courage to keep improving when others doubt you.

And I can relate to this from my own experience.

Don’t worry, I am a horrible singer. I have other strong qualities.

During my participation in speech competitions and hackathons, I always met people who did not like the idea, the presentation, or the execution.

But I learned something valuable:

Criticism is not always an obstacle. Sometimes, it is data.

When I listened carefully, filtered the feedback, adjusted my plan, and stayed focused on the goal, I was able to win competitions and bring home the trophy.

This is also true in leadership.

As leaders, we cannot ignore criticism. But we also cannot let every opinion change our direction.

Strategic leadership is about knowing when to listen, when to adapt, and when to stay committed to the vision.

I am truly happy for Dara and for Bulgaria.

And I hope this victory reminds all of us to look at criticism differently.

Use the helpful feedback.

Ignore the noise.

Keep improving.

And do not give up too early.

Sometimes the underdog becomes the winner.
