The formula to achieve our dreams is simple:

(Focus + commitment + right support) * self-motivation = achieving our dreams fast

The role of the coach is to support the person in achieving their dreams. The accountability must be with the coachee. They must be self-motivated, took an active role in their goal-setting process and accountability.

Let me demonstrate that statement with the following story.

The Commitment

Being fit is something many people struggle with. It’s easy to commit to something when we are happy and enthusiastic, but what about all the other days that we are feeling down?

It was the 30th of December. The day before I had arranged a meeting with a buddy of mine. The goal was to go to the gym and support each other in achieving better results. However, as the famous quote of John Lennon states: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”

The Struggle

And it’s true, the night before I went to a party. The next day I felt very lazy, and I didn’t want to do anything. However,  I had promised to myself that I will go and second I promised to my friend I would be there.  Being 4 degrees outside made that decision even harder. However, the above points were enough for me to wake up and leave the comfort of my cosy warm bed. I reach the gym and I received an SMS that my friend was partying as well and surprise, surprise he decided to sleep instead.

The Decision

I will be 100% honest. I hadn’t reached the gym yet when I read that news. And for a second I thought to myself that since I was tired as well, I should call it a day and go home. I also deserve some rest. However, I had promised myself that I will do it and this was a strong motivation to continue.

The Outcome

Maybe my workout wasn’t so intense as it would be if there was someone to support me and challenge me to put even more weight, but it was a step in the right direction.

However, if I had the right focus and a person who all the time motivated me to go on, without our own motivation, the result will always equal to 0.

“Without our own motivation, the result will always equal to 0.”

The role of the coach is to support the coachee, to reach their desired destination faster and to help them find their true destination. It’s up to the coachee to be self-motivated to walk the path.
